[The Father must be in a cloud and when he speaks of heaven, let the leaves open] THE FATHER IN HEAVEN I am Alpha and Omega. I am very truly without beginning or end, here within the clouds, on the face of the water for sure, three persons in one deity, for ever reigning together in great honour and power. I and my Son and the Holy Spirit, are three in one substance, embraced within one God. [Genesis, chapter one] I am called God the Father, almighty above everything. Soon, by my power, heaven, a regal mansion for my abode, shall be created, and it is my will that this shall be my throne seat. And the earth also shall soon be created below in due proportion. This shall be my footstool for my pleasure at all times and for my honour as well. Heaven is here made by me for my undoubted godhead, and in it will be placed those who praise me with joy and song. Nine orders of glorious angels they shall be, regal and splendid, messengers sent to me to serve me for ever. It is my will that they shall be eternal. ### KDL page 2 (cw0032 -- cw0073) [Stokes cw0032 -- cw0074] Now I want every Order to proceed to its throne and each will be allocated to its degree in my service when I give the command. Here, next to my throne, the first three shall be created. Cherubim, you shall be the highest. Come forward quickly; Seraphim, also Thrones. You will all be praising me as is my eternal will, here at all times. An you, bright Lucifer, your name is thus, you will sit above every angel. You are the first Order. See that you worship me everywhere as is your due. Three Orders more shall surely be created in the second degree. Come before me, Principalities. you shall sit just here. Power on the other side, Dominion, this way, praising and ever lauding my name without guile. Of the third degree below I will make three Orders more. Archangels, a very great Order, come forward here to me, and Virtues also. And the angels, you will indeed sit here on the right. You will be messengers for me and carry out my commands with great joy and song at all times. Now that heaven and earth are made for me according to my will, and the nine Orders completed, and the first day is through, I will bless them with my lips, ### KDL page 3 (cw0074 -- cw0117) [Stokes cw0075 -- cw0118] and I shall come down to the earth beneath the clouds and I shall exert my will there so that it is seen that I am God without equal. Now, on the second day I shall make immediate Majesty. My will is that a light be formed in the sky which is above and also that there is a clear division between the day and the night. By my might, not a thing on the earth shall I fail to manage. The great sea shall be brought around my land in a short time to keep it very clear from corruption at all times. The third day I shall make the trees stand up and bear leaves fair and good and sweet flowers for sure. That is my will, that in great splendour they bear upon them fruits to my liking to nourish all that shall yet have life. The fourth day the sun and the moon shall indeed be made and the stars also to give eternal light. These are finely wrought. I bestow my blessing upon them. On the fifth day, according to my purpose, the unfailing fish and all the birds as well I shall create for my pleasure, and all the beasts in the world with creeping things of every kind. These are all perfectly made. I truly bless them all as one. LUCIFER IN HEAVEN Quiet, I say, all angels of heaven! Listen to me now! Believe that I am a powerful prince and also lord over you, great and small. ### KDL page 4 (cw0118 -- cw0161) [Stokes cw0119 -- cw0162] Lucifer is my name, a prince here in heaven. My peers are few. You know that well, that I am superior to the Father. I am the lantern of heaven, indeed, like a shining fire, brighter by far than the Trinity. Bear ye witness of that, that I am a very glorious prince. I am all shining with gold, without any doubt. All of you can see that I am, indeed, brighter than the sun, all the time. I do not want any other angel except me to achieve my status. That is my fixed design. I am as great as God. Everywhere, I command all who are in heaven to worship me. All you angels who heard, what do you say to me now? That I am not the greatest? Answer all of you, every one. You know what I am. The Father has gone away. If I can, my plan is that he shall not come here for ever. ANGEL OF LUCIFER Lucifer, you are he for sure who excels all who are in heaven. You are nobly created here, powerful by nature and that I believe. Therefore I will surely honour you above the Trinity. ANGEL OF GOD in that degree You monstrous creature, speaking against your Maker! Why do you not consider that you were created here by God, you useless wretch? When you compare yourself with him you are greatly to blame and you will suffer torment for it. ### KDL page 5 (cw0162 -- cw0200) [Stokes cw0163 -- cw0201] ANGEL OF LUCIFER in the second degree speaks kneeling. Who is this who is so bold as to speak a word against Lucifer? Here he has told you that in heaven is not his peer, and I believe that. You will see him in radiance, brighter indeed than the sun. I will honour you as I must. ANGEL OF GOD in that degree. Be quiet, do not speak of that I beg you; believe what I say. Consider; he who formed him here will destroy him again when it is his will. If you dwell in that belief you will be sorry for it, you may be sure. ANGEL OF LUCIFER in the 3rd degree speaks kneeling. Whoever it is who says that Lucifer is not worthy to govern us here and indeed be supreme in heaven speaks a lie: yea, and ever worthy to be seated as God upon a throne without any equal. I praise him here as I must, even upon my knees because he is so worthy of love. LUCIFER IN HEAVEN Inasmuch as I reign here in glory on an exalted throne, you will all sit with me right by my side, all you who hearken to me. [Let him offer to ascend to the throne. The Angel stops him] I was made in a moment*. You may be glad of such a creature in heaven and so brightly wrought. I am handsome in the view of all. Come up to me everyone, and then I shall attempt to be master on the throne. ### KDL page 6 (cw0201 -- cw0239) [Stokes cw0202 -- cw0240] ANGEL OF GOD in the 3rd degree Lucifer, you are most ungrateful towards your Maker. For this, there is danger you will incur his grave displeasure, of which you are worthy. Why do you not consider that you were indeed created here by his doing? So bear well in mind. He can destroy you again by a word, accursed one. LUCIFER IN HEAVEN Michael, you are too proud when you oppose me. I believe and suppose you would now like to be equal with me. No, no you wouldn't, never fear, neither you nor your peers. If you do I shall hit you. So worship me and altogether trust me. You shall see me shining, brighter indeed than the Father. Believe that that is what I am. THE FATHER IN HEAVEN (The Father comes out in front of heaven and speaks to Lucifer) Oh, Lucifer, Lucifer, you were the whole lantern of heaven, and you were always surely greatly exalted by me who set you up very high. Now, since you oppose me, you are most monstrous. Because of your pride you will descend to where you will go down low to eternal torment. I am determined about one thing, and resolved as well; to make a man here from earth and mud to serve me, and to lay your place open, ### KDL page 7 (cw0240 -- cw0281) [Stokes cw0241 -- cw0282] to fill the halls in heaven that will quickly be vacated by you and your friends. [Let hell gape when the Father names it] Hell will be created for you. I will order that quickly. There you shall dwell and all those out of the nine orders who took part with you. I say you will you will be for ever there in torment, without any ransom or conclusion, all the time lamenting for sorrows until the end. LUCIFER IN HEAVEN Oh! Do you really want man-kind made from horrid mud to occupy my hall, me without equal here in heaven? That would be a dreadful affair! A man whom you will make from clay to come here to this place which is full of glory? He is not worthy of it! No, no, it shall not be so. I give you this answer. I shall quite surely keep this place from him, and from you as well, upon my word. You see me here in might still bouncing* back very proudly. Half the angels are in league with me sirra, to uphold me in spite of you, as you see. For well nor woe / I will not go / I say you so This will not be / Believe you me For I surely feel that I am above all who have ever yet been created. ### KDL page 8 (cw0282 -- cw0318) [Stokes cw0283 -- cw0319] THE FATHER Silence, accursed Lucifer, proud in your heart as you are. For soon you are going to torment without redemption; believe me, believe me indeed. All your splendour and beauty will soon turn upon you to ugliness and utterly revolting obscenity. Michael, prince of my cavalry, and the nine orders of angels, down indeed with this revolt, lord and underling, to hell, a foul dwelling. Let them dwell there always in torment and great grief, certain sure and for ever. [All the angels must have swords and staves, and must come to the room where Lucifer is.] MICHAEL All come together, the nine orders! Let us at once drive Lucifer out of heaven. LUCIFER You fellow, I will question you. Why will God condemn me when I am so glorious and mighty? MICHAEL Because you are accursed and your heart is too proud. I will prove to you by reason. You fool, why did you not consider that you were made by the hand of God, and also exalted by him above all the angels seated in heaven seated here on his throne? [Let Lucifer offer to go up to the throne.] LUCIFER I will even sit on the throne and will keep that same place still in spite of you. Also, I and my companions will prove by the sword that I am indeed worthier than the Father at all times. ### KDL page 9 (cw0319 -- cw0345) [Stokes cw0320 -- cw0346] GABRIEL Upon them, everyone in heaven! Let us drive him away out of heaven, to hell and darkness. And all you his companions go away also with him!* Beat them with swords! [Let them fight with swords, and in the end Lucifer goes away and goes down to Hell, dressed disgustingly, with fire round him, turning towards hell, and every degree of devils of leather and spirits on cords running into the plain and so remain there. Nine angels after Lucifer go to hell.] LUCIFER IN HELL Out, alas! Boasts are finished! I am in darkness. I cannot get out of it. I am cast into a deep pit within hell, bound with chain, surrounded by fire. Although I have no joy, there are plenty of angels who have come down to dwell with me. GOD THE FATHER Lucifer has gone, the evil worm, out of heaven into darkness. And now, in his place, I will surely create a man right in the Ebron Valley to take up, indeed, the place from which he came. [Adam and Eva appear {apparalled?} in white leather, in a place appointed by the conveyer, and not to be seen till they are called, and then they kneel and rise.] Inasmuch as we are One and Three, Father and Son in Trinity, presently I shall make you, you man, from clay, in appearance like us, ### KDL page 10 (cw0346 -- cw0382) [Stokes cw0347 -- cw0383] and breathe spirit into your body so that you might live, and when you lose your life you will return again to the earth. Adam, stand up quietly and change to flesh and blood. Consider that from earth I have made you like me, head to foot. Receive authority over all that is on land and sea. You will surely live until you are grey to bring forth offspring. Now, for your sake I will create paradise, a place exceedingly delightful. Here it is created for my pleasure! [Let the father put Adam into paradise. Let flowers appear in paradise. Let paradise be finely made with two fair trees in it and an apple upon the one tree and some other fruit on the other. A fountain in paradise and fine flowers painted in it] See many flowers of every kind growing in this place, and fruit on every tree. It grows both winter and summer. And now over all the place I grant you to be warden. I leave you in charge over every fruit, plant and seed for your pleasure. But see you are always on your guard. Take care that this tree is not interfered with; I charge you above everything. This tree is called the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. If its fruit is tasted you will be condemned for it, and subject to death through it; bear that in mind. It is certainly a sad thing to see Adam alone without a partner. ### KDL page 11 (cw0383 -- cw0407) [Stokes cw0384 -- cw0408] Adam, go to sleep now. I will extract a rib from you, from your side and from this indeed I will create for you a bride. [Let Adam lie down & sleep where Eve is and she must be taken by the conveyer from Adam's side. Let the father take a bone out of Adam's side] Quickly from one of your ribs I will make you a partner to help you at all times. [At the Father's command she (read they) arise]* ADAM Ah, Ah, Ah! My good Lord! She shall be called "woman". You created her from my body. Eve is made from my rib. For that you are blessed! [Let fish of various kinds appear and certain beasts such as oxen, cattle, sheep & such like] FATHER Here are the fish Adam, birds in the air as well as beasts on land and sea. Give them their names. They will come at your command, but do not oppress them in any way. ADAM I name cow and bull. Let all the different creatures take their names, horse and mare and ass, dog and cat and mouse, various birds and snakes. [A fine serpent made with a girl's face and yellow hair upon her head] ### KDL page 12 (cw0408 -- cw0441) [Stokes cw0409 -- cw0442] I name the fish; bream, gurnard, eel. I classify them all clearly. [Let the serpent appear and also geese and hens] FATHER As all things that have been made in six days are complete and good I will bless them so that the seventh day may be called the undoubted day of rest for every man who is saved. In token of that I shall rest forthwith. [After the father has spoken let him depart to heaven in a cloud] LUCIFER I have had a terrible ejection from heaven into the pit of hell. There, I was in command and now I am in very grievous ever lasting torment. There is no help for me. The sin was so great. It is useless to seek mercy. I know the Father will not forgive me my folly. Therefore all the revenge I can think up I will wreak at once in some form of bitter spite. I don't care who it is against. I know that a man had been created from clay by the Father. He is made like him, the whole of his person very handsome. I cannot tolerate that. I am jealous of him. I will set some trap to trick him if I can. ### KDL page 13 (cw0442 -- cw0481) [Stokes cw0443 -- cw0482] By God he is appointed warden over all paradise. I am aggrieved because of this, to see him raised up, and me brought down low. He has a wife, a woman called Eve. She was made from his rib, wonderfully and exceedingly beautiful but she is not very bright. If I can, I want to find some way to tempt her as I am a cunning character. Now Adam is lording it up like a duke in paradise, and I am stuck here in hell, in fire all the time, burning in great heat. But this same Adam has been made, I know without any doubt in the matter, to fill up the halls which are in heaven which are now empty of me and my retinue because of my great pride. But if by a trick I can make Adam give heed to me, I would bring him to torment so that he would never come again to heaven, if he would give heed to me. But I will try Eve. She is easier to deceive than Adam, and really more simple as well. Moreover I must not be seen myself in this state. I am hideously disfigured. Nothing can be uglier. You can all see me. BEELZEBUB You are quite ugly I admit. Among all the devils there is none uglier. ### KDL page 14 (cw0482 -- cw0515) [Stokes cw0483 -- cw0516] So find some way to fix it or it won't be worth going. Eve will shudder at you when she sees your appearance in that guise. And if you strike a good bargain you will be in great honour in spite of God, clever though he is. If he is tricked In that way, I shall be even with him. LUCIFER Don't worry, I will forestall him and bring him plenty of trouble. I will tell you how. [Let the serpent wait on the plain] Among all the reptiles in the world the Father intentionally created a reptile called a serpent and it has a wondrous face just like a fair virgin. Moreover it is clever above every beast or reptile in the world. I will enter it and go privately, unfailingly, to paradise. Although she cannot talk at all I shall control her as I wish and before leaving there I will do some mischief to Adam and Eve. THE DEVIL TORPEN Please do so as you are a wily devil. If you do so you will be for ever honoured and chief ruler over us for ever without any doubt at all. [Let Lucifer come to the serpent and attempt to go into her] ### KDL page 15 (cw0516 -- cw0546) [Stokes cw0517 -- cw0547] LUCIFER By and by you will see how quickly I play the trick on the serpent in spite of her demeanour*. [The serpent moves away and stops and [Lucyfer again] attempts to go into her] Oh, may you come to a bad end! Keep still and submit to me! Let me get inside, for you will not be feared because you are so beautiful. [Lucifer enters the serpent] You will be accepted and believed by Eve. She will like how you look. Now I have got right inside you, see, my voice has all changed indeed like a maiden. I shall not be perceived as having falsehood in me. I think I am quite clever and I will go without making a sound into the smooth tree, bedecked like an angel. [Let Eve walk in paradise] EVE I will go and wander here among the flowers. Here is every pleasure of this world growing in this place so that it is a joy to behold. [the serpent singeth in the tree] SERPENT IN THE TREE Eve, why don't you come close to chat and talk to me? One thing I know for sure. It would make me very happy if only you would listen to me. ### KDL page 16 (cw0547 -- cw0576) [Stokes cw0548 -- cw0577] [Then Eve wonders at the Serpent when she speaks. Let Eve look strangely at the Serpent when she speaks] EVE Who are you in the tree above singing noisily? I am surprised to hear you. I have no business with you and where you have come from. I am surprised to see you. SERPENT Do not be surprised at all, good woman. I have just left heaven in very great haste to talk to you about this very privately here and now. Please, on no account be surprised or fearful at seeing me. EVE I am not afraid of you because your appearance is so beautiful, nor yet afraid at all because it would seem from your word that you have come very quickly from heaven, and if you have come from there you are very welcome to me and I shall trust you all the more. Tell me your business and if I can help you, have no doubt, it will not be refused. SERPENT My business is to your advantage if you will trust me but I am very much afraid of misfortune from you if you betray me. [Eve talks familiarly with the serpent and comes near him] ### KDL page 17 (cw0577 -- cw0612) [Stokes cw0578 -- cw0613] EVE I will not betray you my friend for anything at all. So you can tell me your business very boldly and my trust is that it will be good. SERPENT It must be*. Fear no danger, on my honour, good woman. Otherwise I would be found wanting and that would be a very great sin and I would be worthy of being punished. EVE You speak truly, good sir. That would be an ugly thing. I have a great longing to know what it could be! Tell me your business briefly, I beg you. SERPENT I will tell you, Eve, and pay the utmost heed to me. You would be as great as God who is above and you would know everything. EVE Michael!** Many thanks sir! If only I could reach that point I would be very merry! It would be a noble thing, to be a familiar of God above and equal to him in every way, and reckoned as wise. Then by the Holy Verity I could rule right nobly and be stately in my own way. I beg you, tell me how. I cannot wait any longer! It will surely be the worse for me unless you tell me very soon. ### KDL page 18 (cw0613 -- cw0648) [Stokes cw0614 -- cw0649] A woman's wit is weak and I am not too clever. Tell me the news at once, please. SERPENT I tell you Eve, if you taste this fruit which is here on the tree, you would be as wise as God above, high above us in heaven. I do not tell a lie. [Let Eve look angrily on the serpent and proffer to depart.] EVE What! Is that your idea? That won't be believed one bit, I tell you. In reply to your advice on that score, I'll tell you why. God commanded otherwise, that we should not taste it. And indeed he gave his commandment especially strictly that we should not interfere with it. Why do you cajole me? SERPENT Listen, Eve, listen, and come closer. I am ashamed to hear you believing those words. Why, I say to you, did God give that command? If it were tasted by you, you would surely be as wise in every way as him. The Father would surely not want any man at all to be so wise as to know about evil and good. So, mistress Eve, I don't want to cajole you or lie to you. ### KDL page 19 (cw0649 -- cw0677) [Stokes cw0650 -- cw0678] Pay heed to me who am able to advise you if you want to be exalted, or you will certainly be like children for ever. Otherwise you will listen with acquiescence, gentle Eve. EVE Yes, yes, I can hear. And he gave us such a strict instruction that we shall have distress and anguish if we break one jot of his commandment given to us. Maybe we shall always have our abode in hell if his will is not followed. SERPENT Hush, hush, Eve, you are foolish; you will not heed what is good. I vouch for it; you will lament it if you refuse my advice. I am not pleased with you. If I did not love you I would not advise you there was such a great deal to be made. EVE [She comes near the serpent again and gives heed to his words.] If only I knew it was true I would accede to your wish because you come from heaven. SERPENT You speak truly, good wife. There is no need for you to be suspicious. Only good people come from heaven. I am one of that kind. ### KDL page 20 (cw0678 -- cw0713) [Stokes cw0679 -- cw0714] Give some to your husband or the trip will not be worth the candle unless he has his share. EVE I will not be greedy and keep it all myself. Indeed I love Adam more than anyone, else God forbid keeping him without his share. SERPENT I will extend the branch. Take the fruit off it. [Let the serpent bow down the apple to Eve, and she takes the apple.] EVE I certainly will. I cannot hold out for long when it is given* me to taste of it. SERPENT Have no fear. You may be right joyful. With your eyes wide open you will see everything here, and you will be made as wise as God. Do not doubt that, Eve, I tell you. If it were not that I loved you I would not for anything want you to be raised up. EVE Thank you very much, sir, for giving me such sound advice. I will pay heed to you and by God I have no fear of tasting that apple. And my husband will be grateful to me for undertaking such a noble enterprise, and by God, the Trinity Father, he will no doubt set me up on high and praise me greatly. SERPENT Be on your way Eve, good-wife. You may be grateful to me for the undertaking. ### KDL page 21 (cw0714 -- cw0752) [Stokes cw0715 -- cw0752] And Adam, as he is a good man, esteems you highly. He will not regret the deal. EVE Farewell my friend from heaven. I shall always love you. I will go to Adam very resolutely to greet him and present the apple. SERPENT Please do so. You will hear other news before you see me again. [Eve departs to Adam and presents the apple to him] EVE Adam. Adam, where are you? Listen to me and come close. I have something you will like. Don't be afraid a trick is being played to make you grateful to me. ADAM You are welcome Eve, you good woman. If the news is good you will be rewarded and along with it my heart will always be yours. EVE [Show the apple to Adam] Look, look at this! Here it is! What a splendid apple for you! If you taste it it will be worth more than thousands of pounds to you. ADAM Come here. Let me see whether it is a good apple. Tell me where it was found. [Adam is afraid at the sight of the apple] EVE Why, Adam my spouse? Oh dear, are you afraid to see it? Please tell me. ADAM I do not like the look of it. I am very much afraid. I do not think it is good. Look you, if this was picked from the forbidden tree I shall be aggrieved because of it. ### KDL page 22 (cw0753 -- cw0794) [Stokes cw0753 -- cw0795] EVE Never fear that, sweet Adam, my love. I will tell you, if it pleases you, how I had it. Sir, as I was wandering I heard a sweet angel singing clearly above me on a tree. I took wondrous delight in seeing him there in the tree and upon my word, he courteously offered me in friendship many things of great worth. ADAM Oh Eve, Eve, you were wrong to pay heed to that angel. I believe he was a bad lot whom you listened to singing, and who advised you to pluck that apple. EVE Sir, he spoke to me so sweetly I could not deny him one bit, and his promise was so sweet that he made me heed him. On my soul I had no fear of treachery. And his promise was so generous! If we tasted that fruit we would be like God and as wise. I did wrong at that time. If we could have attained that height it would have been a very wise deal. ADAM Oh out, out upon you Eve! I can curse that! We are thrown into deep trouble and well deserved. That was a terrible deal, Eve, I tell you. Little enough will be the gain when you have reckoned everything up. Woe and alas! ### KDL page 23 (cw0795 -- cw0831) [Stokes cw0796 -- cw0832] EVE [Proffer the apple to Adam. He refuses it] Quiet, Adam. Do not be angry. No harm has yet come of it. I feared the same danger and I told him the risk in every detail but he assured me, most skilfully at his own risk, that there was no danger for me in the situation. ADAM Oh, a curse on the crooked villain and you too with him! We shall certainly have a catastrophe because of your venture just now and be worthy of blame. EVE [Let her speak angrily to Adam] Yes, yes, I shall get all the blame from you now, Adam whichever way the ball goes. But if we had been made gods you would not be angry one little bit, I know that very well. ADAM Be quiet, don't be so stupid. The serpent was too clever for you this time. He told you plenty of lies and you believed them. My words will be proved so that there will be much pain because of it. EVE Yes, you are a wise man. You would not pay heed to me. If I do not get what I want you will never see me here one moment, I tell you. [Let her offer to depart] The angel who was in the tree spoke plain words and I believe him. Sir, in brief, taste some of the apples or you will lose my love. ### KDL page 24 (cw0832 -- cw0864) [Stokes cw0833 -- cw0866] [proffer him the apple] Look, take the beautiful apple or the love between you and your wife will fail completely if you will not eat it. ADAM That is a wretched situation since I must take heed or lose the love which is ordained to be shared. Gentle Eve, do not be angry. I will do all as you wish. Bring it me at once and I will eat it. [Eve gives him the apple] EVE Yes, do so for me. So long as we live you will have my love for ever. Look at this apple here. Take it quickly in case I get angry with you. [Adam receives the apple and tastes it and so repents and throws it away] ADAM Woe, woe, alas, I have sinned and broken the prohibition! You evil, graceless woman, you have tricked me without cause. Our bodies have become naked. Look at us all over. Let us completely cover our private parts with green leaves. I know for sure. I expect God our Father will bring his anger to bear very heavily upon us. [Eve looks upon Adam very strangely and speaks [not] any thing] Look, look, can you see him, Eve? He is coming here. For shame, let's get out of here and hide somewhere secret. ### KDL page 25 (cw0865 -- cw0900) [Stokes cw0867 -- cw0902] FATHER Adam, Adam, what are you doing? Why do you not come and welcome me? ADAM I went to hide from you in this place because I am naked, without clothing. FATHER [fig leaves ready to cover their members] Who showed you that you were naked, feet, body and arms except the fruit for which you have no permission to go and eat except in sin? Why did you do so? ADAM You gave me a wife. She is entirely to blame. She picked the beautiful apple and brought it me to taste. FATHER Since you paid heed to her and acted contrary to my prohibition you will eat in the sweat of toil until your end. Eve, why did you deceive your betrothed without cause? EVE The serpent tempted me to do that by falsehood, and he promised me we would always be better for it. This is true. FATHER Because you heeded him and deceived your faithful spouse I command that woman shall for ever be obedient to her husband. Rely on my word. To increase her toil for breaking my command she will indeed never have a child without great labour. [the father speaks to the serpent] Speak, accursed one. Why did you deceive them? ### KDL page 26 (cw0901 -- cw0937) [Stokes cw0903 -- cw0939] SERPENT I will tell you the reason; because they have such great joy and I am for ever burning. FATHER Serpent, because you tempted them, much pain is ordained for you. You are accursed beyond all things and beyond every reptile and beast in the world. Mankind shall always have a continuous fear of you for ever, and you, reptile, will creep and slide along on the ground. I shall set everlasting enmity between her seed and you, and that will surely crush your head to the ground. LUCIFER THE SERPENT Here's an ugly outcome so I may moan "Alas". I have proved myself a bad manager so I am condemned to great punishment in hell's pit, my main residence. [Let Lucifer come out of the serpent; the serpent remains in the tree.] I will begin to creep and slide along on the ground. Look, you see me changed to my own form, a great evil fellow. Though I have no joy, the churl Adam, and Eve will come to me in hell, and their offspring for all time, directed by the Father's lips. And let the serpent remain there. He shall never come away for he greatly accursed. [And let him creep on his belly to hell with great noise] ADAM O Father, God in your glory, since I am cast away to evil, grant to your creature, I beg, some share of the Oil of Mercy. ### KDL page 27 (cw0938 -- cw0974) [Stokes cw0940 -- cw0976] FATHER Adam, before the end of the world I will grant you the Oil of Mercy and to Eve your wife. But, indeed, believe me; because of paying heed to your wife, because of plucking the fruit which I forbade you, it will bring forth, I tell you, thorns and briars, and in your sweat you will eat the herbs of the earth for your bread for ever and ever until you are changed again. I created the earth beforehand. From dust here you were made and to dust you will go again. [Let the father ascend to heaven] ADAM Your will be done, Lord of Heaven and Earth also. I may be gladdened, before the end of the world, to receive the Oil of Mercy. Although torments await somewhere in hell, it is we who deserved it for breaking the ban. FATHER IN HEAVEN Michael, splendid angel, go down, drive Adam and his wife out of paradise with a sword of fire. And take them two garments to cover them all the time so that their nakedness is not seen. MICHAEL IN HEAVEN I will do that Lord. I am ready with everything to go to them from here. [descend angel] Adam, go out of the realm to the middle-earth to dwell; you yourself to dig, your wife with you to spin. ### KDL page 28 (cw0975 -- cw1009) [Stokes cw0977 -- cw1011] [The two garments of skins to be given to Adam and Eve by the angel. Receive the garments. Let them depart out of paradise and Adam and Eve following them. Let them put on the garments and show a spindle and a distaff] Adam, and Eve, here is clothing for you to wear. Hurry, get dressed.* Hurry to the door for you will not stay here. Here are your digging tools and spinning equipment ready. DEATH I am Death, God's messenger directed here by him. Because of breaking the commands ordained by God to Adam he and his offspring shall die. So it is appointed that I shall slay all who dwell on the earth with my spear. If Adam and Eve had not sinned and broken the Father's ban they would not have tasted death but would have lived for ever continuously in pleasure. He was here appointed chief warden over paradise, and by his sin and greed all his joy is lost so there were punishments for him. They were deceived by the devil through the accursed serpent as you all saw here. [Death departs] ADAM That is a great pity, that through the accursed serpent, we have been so stupid that we have lost the place ordained for us, to dwell here always full of joy. ### KDL page 29 (cw1010 -- cw1045) [Stokes cw1012 -- cw1047] Now, Eve, my wife, that was your folly. Because of it very severe punishments are ordained for us so that we may lament because of them. EVE I did not know how to deal with him. So many fair words put me to the test. Because of that, on my soul, I supposed he was an angel of heaven sent to me. Sir, though I be hanged his beguiling was so glorious I could not do otherwise, upon my word. ADAM Oh alas that you believed the great devil and his evil! For he was too wily when he went inside the serpent to deceive you. Since I am completely without refuge and driven from paradise I will start digging to find sustenance and food for me and the children and a suit of clothes. EVE I will spin as well to make clothes to cover me and my children that are born. ADAM Alas, woe to him when he was born for breaking God's command! We are driven from paradise to the earth to our woe. I find nothing of use anywhere here, nor nourishment other than beasts. How shall we stay alive? ### KDL page 30 (cw1046 -- cw1085) [Stokes cw1048 -- cw1087] EVE This is not paradise, oh no, Adam no! There there were beautifully coloured flowers and fruit to eat, whenever we looked at them. The regime is different now. Alas that we heeded the reptile! ### CAIN AND ABEL ### ADAM [shows his two sons] There are two sons born to me and they have grown into men. You can all see them. Cain is my elder son; Abel is my younger son, obedient and well behaved children. [He speaks to Cain] I want to give you each a job to look after the corn and the cattle. Cain, your job will be to look after the oats, barley and wheat to offer the correct tithe ... [He turns to Abel] ... and Abel, the offering of the beasts and oxen and all the sheep in the field. and when you have to pay a tithe take them to Mount Tabor and burn them there lest God is angry if we do not make a correct offering. CAIN Adam, my dear father, I will carry out your bidding in full without fail. It is most necessary for us to work in the world here to gain our living. ABEL [A lamb ready with fire and incense] I will go to the mountain and pay the tithe now, and burn this completely. And I will wholly discharge the full tenth part of everything by fire as a sure offering on it. ### KDL page 31 (cw1086 -- cw1122) [Stokes cw1088 -- cw1123] CAIN I will not burn it, neither the corn nor the fruit. Quiet, I say, Abel, you empty head! I will collect thorn and briar and dung to burn without any fuss and which makes a big cloud of smoke. ABEL Cain, that is not well done. In honour of God the Father let us make our sacrifice true. God demands to be worshipped with the best fruit always. I will do it even though I die. Cain, my brother, look and consider. This is a sweet smoke. CAIN Quiet, hang you! This is better indeed, you carping fool. ABEL It cannot be, when you make your sacrifice with dung. CAIN By God who made me, I wish you were strung up high. For going directly against me I will beat you, you wretched rascal so you tip over backwards. [A jawbone ready] Take that on the jaw with a jaw bone, you dirty wretch. ABEL [Abel is struck with a jaw bone] Alas, alack, you have slain me, Cain my brother. You will suffer a sure punishment in this world for your deed; do not think otherwise. ### KDL page 32 (cw1123 -- cw1163) [Stokes cw1124 -- cw1165] CAIN Look, he's dead, surly bastard. I will not be ordered about. Now he is ridden out of the world. I wish he were hidden in some hedge covered ditch. [Cast Abel into a ditch] The fellow had wanted to burn our corn supplies indeed. We can't tolerate that. I know for sure God has no need at all to have what belongs to us. Even though my father is angry when he hears the news that he is killed, I who am the heir, am not bothered at all. See where he is thrown to go rotten in a ditch. I have no remorse at all that he was slain by my hand because I am a smart operator. FATHER Tell me Cain, where is Abel? Answer me quickly. CAIN [when the father speaks to Cain, let him look down] I do not know at all, Lord. You know that well. I am not his keeper. Perhaps a wolf - so must I go - slew him a little way off, the dirty wretch. He is old and obdurate. Since he can't look after himself, I won't be his lad. FATHER Hark, the voice of the death of Abel your brother ever calling upon you from the earth everywhere. May you ever be accursed and all the land you own is accursed in your deed. May it never bring forth good fruit nor other bounty any time. I place my curse upon you. Take unto yourself the curse of my Son and my Spirit. ### KDL page 33 (cw1164 -- cw1190) [Stokes cw1166 -- cw1192] CAIN [Let Cain not look in the father's face but look down and quake] I can hear your voice, Lord, but to my woe indeed, I cannot see your face. Greater are my misdeeds and also my sins than your mercy, O God, to forgive me. Now I am most truly feebler and weaker than any man in the world. I cannot say why I am not slain by everyone, just because of this deed. FATHER Cain, you will not be so, for if any man slays you he will receive sevenfold. [Let the father make a mark on his forehead, this word: omega] I will put a sign upon you. When that is seen you will not been touched by any man. [Let the father departs to heaven CAIN I will go to my father and see how he reacts to the news. Now God speed you, my father. I have made a great offering and burnt a great quantity of corn. ADAM That was very well done. Tell me, where is Abel? Why, has he not come? ### KDL page 34 (cw1191 -- cw1224) [Stokes cw1193 -- cw1226] CAIN If you are concerned about him ask his keeper. Has he lost his brother? I regard him as worse than a bogey man. I don't know where he has wandered off to. ADAM This is a facetious answer. It sickens my heart to hear you at this moment. You have killed him I do believe! My curse upon you for that and you will surely also have your mother's curse also. When she hears the news her heart will break. Be off from here at once, accursed as you are. I cannot bear the sight of you to stand upright because of sorrows. I am collapsing on the ground. My heart has broken into two. CAIN I am cursed enough. There is no need to curse me any more. Bear in mind I shall not annoy you nor indeed my mother. Rather than stay I shall go away from here and wander around the country. I doubt I shall find a dwelling so great are the curses. [Eve comes to Adam where he lies and offers to take him up] EVE Adam, what is the matter with you that you are upset like this? Indeed I am greatly grieved in my heart seeing you in this state. ### KDL page 35 (cw1225 -- cw1263) [Stokes cw1127 -- cw1265] ADAM Oh Eve, my dear wife, my heart is near broken. All my joy is most truly lost through the death of my child whom we love the most. EVE Sir, I cannot understand your grief at all. Our two sons, thank God, were very much alive not long ago. Don't get upset. You know, Cain and Abel were given strict instructions to go to Mount Tabor to make an offering. And look, here is Cain come home in great haste. So stand up I beg you and let your cares wander away. I cannot think of a better way. ADAM Eve, there is no hiding this deed from your sight. Abel is slain. Don't break down! EVE [Eve is sorrowful, tears her hair and falls down upon Adam. He comforts her] What? Abel is killed! God forbid that is true! There is not any man in the world to commit this murder except you and my elder son Cain. ADAM Oh, my son Abel is slain by accursed Cain so I am born to great pain. The wrath of God and trouble everywhere is increasing all the time in this world. While we are alive I am sure he will exact punishment. I have no joy from anything at all. EVE Out, alas, what is to be done? This is dreadful news. My heart is broken. I wish I were dead. Alas that ever I was created! ### KDL page 36 (cw1264 -- cw1305) [Stokes cw1266 -- cw1307] Oh accursed Cain, my curse on you for ever! That was an evil deed you did so that both God and the world are for ever calling upon you. Therefore, after this, we shall never rejoice but for ever mourn without any joy or happiness because of your crime here. So get away from here and do not seek to anger us, son of curses that you are. My curse is upon you for all time and you father's curse also you will have, day and night. CAIN I shall not bother about that. I tell you mother, I am aware of so many curses here! I shall never prosper in the world. So I shall go away; I don't know where. A plague on any regret I have for killing the churl Abel for I never liked him! I am going away! [Cain speaks to his wife] Gather together my things. I will go very quickly and far away directly after this to wander in the wasteland. CALAMA HIS WIFE Oh Cain, Cain my dear husband. You have done a very evil deed to kill Abel, a good man. He was your own brother and my brother as well. So it was against nature for you to go and kill him. God's wrath is upon us. CAIN Tilly-vally!* The cat's fart! I still have no remorse for that deed. ### KDL page 37 (cw1306 -- cw1347) [Stokes cw1308 -- cw1349] ADAM Be of good cheer, my spouse. Stop weeping and wailing. Let us be grateful to our Maker for our travail in this world. We have deserved it, and more. So henceforward let us live together in chastity, and we shall altogether forsake carnal joy in this world by the will of God the Father of Mercy. FATHER Adam, you shall not so live according to that rule. Your seed shall increase more than can be counted. So it is ordained. You will surely have a son born of your body. Do not doubt. He will be like you so that no man can be more similar and he will be loved by me. ADAM [Adam kneels] Lord, may you be blessed for warning me like this. May your will most surely always be fulfilled. CAIN Hurry, Calmana, my sister, let us get away from here for now it is high time for us to journey away. Let us carry our things with us, as you are my spouse and my sister on the side of mother and father. The wrath of the Father is upon me for killing big-head Abel, also the curse of mother and father is bestowed upon me more than a hundred fold. CALMANA Oh Cain, you have committed a great wrong in doing that deed. For it you are accursed. Our father and mother Eve are in deep mourning. The murder will never be forgotten by them. ### KDL page 38 (cw1348 -- cw1386) [Stokes cw1350 -- cw1388] So great is their mourning for him their hearts are broken with grief, I dare say. CAIN I am not bothered about that. Never more shall I care a straw for them. They are very angry with me and cursed me so much that I know well I shall never prosper in the world. So let us go away, far away from my father. I will live in the forests or in great bushes and thickets for I cannot bear to be seen though it be the death of me. Because the murder was so great God cannot forgive me, nor in any case do I dare even ask the Father for forgiveness for fear of discovery. [Let him show the mark] CALMANA You are to blame for this. God has set a mark upon you, just here on the corner of your forehead, and thus he spoke these words indeed: Any man who sees this and kills you shall receive a sevenfold affliction. [A bundle to carry with them] CAIN I do not give an egg for the promise. I will not trust it for fear of being deceived. As everything is ready let us go off together, well away into the world round about. And our children as well even though they are still so small. I will carry some on my back. Quickly now! ### KDL page 39 (cw1387 -- cw1424) [Stokes cw1389 -- cw1426] CALMANA Do so, please. I will bring the girl by the hand. My heart is broken so that I have never suffered more distress since the time when I was born. ADAM Praised be God the Father! A son is born to me and grown into a big lad. My son is named Seth. You can see him. Here he is. [Show Seth] I beg the faithful Trinity, while he lives in the world, for him to be a loyal servant thereto. FATHER I tell you, Adam, your son is chosen by me always to be my servant. He shall be filled with knowledge and skill as well. There is no science in the world but he shall be familiar with it, inside and out, by means of the planets. Through the sun and stars above he will discern what shall be after this, both good and evil. ADAM [Adam kneels and Seth also] Much praise to you, my Creator and maker of all the earth. You are a Lord without equal. May you everywhere be praised. He who honours you will not fare ill. In Seth may your will always be fulfilled just as it is, here, in great might. SETH And I also, Lord of Heaven, will serve you loyally as is meet as you are a mighty Lord. While we are here in the world, hear my voice, ### KDL page 40 (cw1425 -- cw1462) [Stokes cw1427 -- cw1464] that I may have grace after this to see you in joy with your angels above, high in heaven. ### LAMECH AND CAIN (THE DEATH OF CAIN) ### LAMECH in tent Peace! Listen all who are round about me here. Lamech is my name. I am indeed son, believe me, to Methuselah. I am descended from Cain, son of Adam in the seventh degree. I am esteemed a great lord indeed. I surely have no living equal. Every one honours me as they should. I am a bad fellow, on my word. I do not do many good turns but I am always preying on the weak if I can. That is my delight. Although my forefather Cain is commonly reckoned a very bad man I hold him in disdain if I am not proved still much worse. I have more than one wife to take my pleasure with. And indeed I am the first ever to have two wives. And I have plenty of girls. They are not fussy. I take them when i want. I don't spare one of them that is pretty - the plague take her!. But I am greatly troubled. I can scarcely see a thing. What the devil! What is to be done? I don't know on my soul and I can't find any cure. ### KDL page 41 (cw1463 -- cw1500) [Stokes cw1465 -- cw1502] The one pleasure I have* is shooting with a bow. I will go very quickly to the forest, away from here in haste and slay the strange beasts. We have never tasted the meat of those beasts nor any beast or animal at all. Meat has not yet been eaten by us nor have we used any wine. We have other food and sustenance enough to live on. I will make myself clothing with the hides of these beasts just as my forefathers did. And my forefather Cain is still alive in the wilderness among the beasts. Because he angered God the Father he was cast into great misfortune, for being an evil character as he is, and laden with curses. [Bow and arrow ready with the servant] My servant, come here and bring my bow with you. I will go exploring to spy out wild beats and with my arrows I will slay some of them. SERVANT Here are your bow and arrows which I have got ready. I will take you into the woods and in very truth, plenty will be found there. [Depart Lamech. His servant leads him to the forest near the bush] CAIN I am forgotten by everybody. Not many people know me. My name is Cain, Adam's eldest son, cast, as you see, into great misfortune. ### KDL page 42 (cw1501 -- cw1542) [Stokes cw1503 -- cw1544] My heart is still proud although I killed the lout Abel. I have no regret at all in spite of the Father's curse. You see me. I am completely grown over with hair. I cannot bear to be seen by any human kind living in this world because I am accursed. And the curse of my father Adam has followed me and his great anger. Because of this I cannot find rest anywhere. I have become the son of curses. Because of this I do nor dare to come among people at any time, but always withdraw into the bushes living continuously like an animal. My folly is so great and my heart is very proud. I will most certainly not seek mercy from the Father though I do not have any joy. I am afraid of being killed by every man. But God the Father himself set his mark on me, with his very own hands. You can all see it. [Show the mark] And he spoke thus, that no man will slay me, on pain of his sure displeasure. And anyone who kills me will pay seven times for it. He spoke with great severity. Yet still, in spite of this promise, I greatly fear he wills not his blessing upon me. Therefore, upon my soul I will go and hide in some bush, though it is grievous for me. [Let him hide himself in a bush] ### KDL page 43 (cw1543 -- cw1578) [Stokes cw1545 -- cw1580] SERVANT Good master, by your leave, I see a very big animal over there crouching in a bush. Sir, among the animals, it is strange to see. Look where it is, master. LAMECH Be very careful it is not a man because I cannot aim. Put my arrow to one side so I can shoot at it. Do not fear, it will be hit. SERVANT [Let his man level the arrow and then shoot] Never fear, that is nothing but an animal and it is strange to see. Now, here is the arrow straight. Draw it up to the head inasmuch as you are an experienced archer who have killed more than a thousand beasts before now. LAMECH Now there is the arrow shot and the beast is surely hit! It has met its death! [when Cain is stricken let blood appear and let him fall] Quick, lead me to it so that I can see what kind of beast it is. CAIN Out, Alas! I am dead! I have no life any longer! I am pierced through the ribs and the arrow has gone right through me. I am very nearly dead! [Lamech comes to him and feels him] Just as I was evil, now I am plague stricken as you all see the proof. LAMECH Out, wretch. What has happened? This is indeed a man slain. I can hear him crying out all the time. ### KDL page 44 (cw1579 -- cw1619) [Stokes cw1581 -- cw1620] SERVANT The beast is calling out! I can see it staggering. It has turned extremely ugly! Give me its skin, I beg you, to make myself a garment to wear. It is strangely hairy and ugly. I don't know what kind of animal it can be. By its appearance it would seem to be some hobgoblin, and will prove to be so. [here Lamech feels him] LAMECH Wait, let me feel it because I can't see very well. Who are you, tell me whether you are a man or some great beast. I am uncertain about you. CAIN Woe! Curse you! I am Cain, son of Adam. By you I am slain. Your father's and mother's curse upon you, and my curse as well! LAMECH What! You are Cain, son of Abraham! I cannot believe that! You are deformed and bent and also you are all overgrown with hair. Why are you lying in the bushes like this? It is amazing! I cannot understand that you are my ancestor nor indeed any kin of mine. CAIN You were begotten of my body and of Adam your ancestor. Now you are accursed and you and your children will be afflicted seven times, believe me. The mark of God is set upon me. You see it on the corner of my forehead. When anyone realises this he certainly should not interfere with me on any account. ### KDL page 45 (cw1620 -- cw1663) [Stokes cw1621 -- cw1664] LAMECH You see, I can see very little, nothing of any account, on my word. Why did God set a mark on the corner of your forehead, tell me? However closely I look, I cannot see much of how you look, nor any mark on your forehead. CAIN I tel you plainly, God was angry with me and in very truth he placed his curse upon me because I killed my brother. He was Abel. Consider whether you want to konow know this. Because of this I feared I would be killed by every one. but God granted to me, given on his displeasure, that I would not be, and anyone who does so would be punished for it. And he set his mark here, on the corner of my forehead as a sign. And it was by you, by your own hands, accursed wretch, that I am now slain. LAMECH Oh, alas to see the time when you were slain by me, if you are Cain, my ancestor. My boy was to blame. He instructed me to shoot, and I most assuredly could hardly see a thing properly. CAIN Oh Lamech, you are an evil character and I too am much worse. That was a very great vengeance and a just punishment ordained for me; woeful the time! LAMECH Cain, although you are my forefather, I could not recognise you, nor indeed have I seen you for many years, for you have changed. ### KDL page 46 (cw1664 -- cw1704) [Stokes cw1665 -- cw1705] CAIN I am greatly changed and overgrown with hair. I am always living in heat and freezing cold, day an night indeed. I cannot willingly bear to see human kind at any time, only the frequent company of all the animals. All the trouble I have is through killing the churl Abel. That us true, believe me. LAMECH Why did you kill him when he was your brother next in line? That was an evil deed committed. CAIN Because he ordered me about, me, his elder brother! He paid me no respect at all! Because of that I got angry and killed him very quickly. I have no regrets for that. The curse of God and father and mother, an evil blow, has followed me just for that deed. My heart is still proud although I am nearly dead. I fear to seek mercy because of my deeds. I know he is a haughty God. He will not forgive me, nor do I seek forgiveness. I am passing away. I will not forgive you. I do not know where my soul is going; to hell which is its dwelling place. Let it there remain, summer and winter. LAMECH Oh, woe to see the time! Cain my ancestor has died! You shall be slain for it, you false, hateful brigand. Your brains are smashed! [kill him with a staff] ### KDL page 47 (cw1705 -- cw1741) [Stokes cw1706 -- cw1742] SERVANT Out! Alas! I am slain and my head smashed very brutally into two - you can see! LAMECH For this reason I will go away as best I can. It is no use grieving for him now. [depart away] FIRST DEVIL The rogue Cain has died. Let us take him to torment and Lamech's lad with him. SECOND DEVIL Come on, accursed soul. You killed your brother Abel, who was a righteous man. You will burn in fire and this lad as well indeed, in hell, you evil fiends. [the devils carry them with great noise to hell] FIRST DEVIL You will dwell in this pit with me, down below, and burn in the heat of fire. You will never leave there, all you who do not do the will of the Father. ### THE DEATH OF ADAM ### ADAM Seth, my son, come here to me and listen to what I have to say. I have lived long in this world so I am weary of the great toil which I have each night and day. So go off at once to paradise and if you can, at all costs, seek out the Oil of Mercy. Do not fear. You will have an answer to the whole of your mission. SETH O dear father, I do not know the way there, nor have I ever been there. I cannot think which way to go, sir, to seek paradise. ### KDL page 48 (cw1742 -- cw1772) [Stokes cw1743 -- cw1773] ADAM Keep straight on to the East. Do not fear or mistrust but the road will be found like this. You will see my footmarks when I came from paradise burnt right into the print itself when the earth was accursed because of my deeds there. [An angel at the gate of paradise, a bright sword in his hand] An when you reach the place you will find an angel by the gate who will give you an answer and you will not fail in my request. Take note of everything you see there, my son. SETH My dear father, I will be off presently and I will come to you again with an answer before I take a break, by the will of the Father above. [Let Seth depart and follow the print of Adam's feet to paradise] I can see my father's footsteps which lead me to paradise. This is a great wonder. The earth has indeed not thrived on the way along which he travelled. We are driven from paradise by the great temptation of the devil through which we suffered a cruel fate, and we were fallen into great misfortune by command of the Father. Alas and woe is me! [A tree in paradise with a maid in the top, and a child in her arms. The serpent in the tree where it was before, and Cain in hell, sorrowing and crying] * ### KDL page 49 (cw1773 -- cw1804) [Stokes cw1774a -- cw1804] I see the glorious place and the angel standing at the gate, splendid and beautiful to behold. I will go straight up to him very humbly and greet him. Angel of God above, gladness and great joy to you! If you please, I have come here to you on behalf of my father. CHERUBIM ANGEL Come close Seth, and tell me your business without hesitation and do not be afraid at all. SETH My business is this, to seek the Oil of Mercy. Thus I am bidden unto you by my father, if you are so willing, for he has grown old and is now wearied in this world. So great is his trouble that he has no wish for anything but is always calling for the Oil of Mercy. ANGEL Come near to the gate, Seth, and look. You can see all paradise. Take note of everything and say what you see that is strange inside the garden. SETH If you are willing I will quickly observe the marvels which are there. [Let Seth look into paradise] [There he looks at all things and sees two trees and in the one tree, sits Mary the Virgin and in her lap her son Jesus in the top of the tree of life, and in the other tree the serpent which caused Eve to eat the apple] ### KDL page 50 (cw1805 -- cw1838) [Stokes cw1805 -- cw1838] ANGEL Now, tell me Seth what can you see inside. Do not hide anything. SETH Indeed, I can see a tree and a serpent high up in it. It would seem to be quite dead. ANGEL That is the same tree from which your mother and father formerly ate the apple of sorrow that was forbidden to them by a strict command from the lips of the Sublime Father. And that serpent which you see is the very reptile which the devil entered to tempt your mother Eve. Because of that God became angry and ordered me to drive them away. Tell me what else you see. SETH I see a fair tree with its top very high up. It is growing up to heaven, and its roots are spreading most truly right down into hell, a very mighty pit. And I see there my brother Cain in great suffering, and in trouble so that his state is woeful. And in the top of the same tree I can see a sweet maiden sitting most surely and a beautiful child in her bosom, so it seems to me. [The Angel goes to the Tree of Life and breaks open an apple and takes three pips and gives them to Seth] ### KDL page 51 (cw1839 -- cw1879) [Stokes cw1839 -- cw1879] ANGEL I tell you plainly, that is the Tree of Life as it is truly called. I will reach some of the fruits and bring a share of them, a very big apple. Here are three pips which have come from this apple. Take them and put them up into some hiding place and take them with you to your father. When he reaches the end of his life and he is buried in the ground, put a pip into his mouth and let the two others also be put into his nostrils. And after that a tree will grow from that that pip, do not doubt, which will be very beautiful. And when it is fully grown it will be ready at all times to bear the Oil of Mercy. When five thousand five hundred years have fully passed, at that time let him eagerly expect the Oil of Mercy at any time and a Saviour indeed to bring him out of torment. Thus tell your father and that he may rely upon it. Thus it is ordained. Hurry away quickly. My blessing upon you. SETH Thank you very much, angel of God for showing me every thing. I will indeed tell my dear father everything just as it is; the wonders, how great they are. In the name of God above, I will go away home to Adam my father. [Seth goes to his father with the cores and gives him them] ### KDL page 52 (cw1880 -- cw1918) [Stokes cw1880 -- cw1918] Joy to you my father! I have now come from paradise, thank God. My errand is done as you commanded me. ADAM You are welcome to me, Seth. What news do you have? I would be very glad if you have brought the Oil of Mercy here with you to your father. SETH Not yet indeed, my father. I will tell you the truth about everything as it will befall. When the full* term of five thousand five hundred years comes, the Oil of Mercy will then be available. In paradise I saw various undoubted wonders, especially a glorious tree reaching very grandly up to the heavens, I really do believe, and its roots reaching the lower ground as far as hell, and there, most truly without fail there was my brother Cain in great trouble, in torment. Now in the top of the beautiful tree there was a sweet virgin and her child, very properly wrapped up in her bosom, wondrously desirable. ADAM Praised be God the Father for giving me this news! Indeed I have not had anything so great more than a hundred years past. SETH I saw another tree and a serpent up in it. It seemed to be quite dead. ### KDL page 53 (cw1919 -- cw1958) [Stokes cw1919 -- cw1957] ADAM That was an utterly evil reptile that deceived Eve your mother. Because of that we have now lost the joys of paradise for ever. SETH Here are three pips brought out of paradise for you. They were broken out of an apple which came indeed from the tree which is called the Tree of Life. The angel ordered me to place a pip in your mouth and the other two quite separately in your two nostrils when the end of your life comes and you have departed hence. From the pips will grow a tree which will be very precious hereafter, wondrous beautiful indeed. An when it is fully grown it will be ready at all times to bear the Oil of Mercy. ADAM Great praise to the Trinity Father for granting me salvation though it will be a long time after this. Listen to me, Seth my son, and under my very sincere blessing I will charge you: Take care to worship the Father of Heaven and pay attention to him in whatever need you might be. He will succour you and maintain you to live long in this world. My son, take note of these words. SETH Dear father, thank you very much for your good instruction at all times. I must indeed praise the God of the faithful Trinity and the sublime Son ... ### KDL page 54 (cw1959 -- cw1999) [Stokes cw1958 -- cw1998] ... and the Holy Spirit, the three of them. As they are one, I do believe they are three persons most worthy, reigning together in joys in the Kingdom of Heaven which is above, and for that reason I must worship them with a pure heart. [Let Death appear to Adam] ADAM I have become old and weak. I do not have any longer to live. Death has come. He will not leave me here to live here a while. I see him with a spear still, ready to pierce me all round. There is no escape for me. As for the time, I am eager. I have served the world a long time since I was first created. I believe I am reckoned nine hundred and thirty years old, so it is time to go hence. I have begotten many children of Eve my spouse, thirty two sons born, this is true, without my son Cain, and Abel. I also had thirty two daughters quite separately without trick or deceit from the beginning of this world. And the world is increased through me and my children without number to be counted. I thank God for them. DEATH Adam, get ready for me. You see me come to take away your life with my spear. There is no more waiting. Therefore I shall pierce you so that it goes through the heart. ### KDL page 55 (cw2000 -- cw2035) [Stokes cw1999 -- cw2034] ADAM I thank you very much, Death, for taking my life out of this world for I am very weary of it. I am grateful to God for it. I am happy that the toil and anguish of the world is overcome for me. I have served it long here and therefore I commend my soul to the faithful Trinity. FIRST DEVIL Get ready, mates, everyone of the devils. Let's go and take the soul of the late Adam to the kitchen, to the deep pit down below. LUCIFER No, no, you will not do that! Something else is ordered for him. He will remain there in limbo above as is commanded by the Father. You know there are mansions in hell for sure where there are devils who came out of bright heaven with me exercising great authority. The churl Adam's dwelling place will be above, in one of those cloisters where there will not be a bit of joy but in great darkness there, bereft of the Father's presence, and the greatest anguish will be his son Cain. He will dwell for ever in great torment. He is down below burning in a deep pit. ### KDL page 56 (cw2036 -- cw2070) [Stokes cw2035 -- cw2069] THIRD DEVIL Why will the churl Adam not be likewise tortured? I will have the crooked rogue imprisoned more harshly if I can before giving up, for breaking the command. LUCIFER I will tell you all about it. Although Adam committed such an enormous sin, he had bitter repentance and God forgave him his displeasure and great anger, and Cain did not do likewise. He who slew his brother had no regrets but rejoiced very greatly and certainly felt nothing for the Father's wrath. Therefore he will indeed live there for ever in great suffering, like a dog. The joy of heaven is lost for him. Yes, the place is ordained in hell down below for Cain and his like, who would live in this manner. And Adam, vengeance on him, limbo is ordained for him, yes for him and his like, they will not taste the great torment. FIRST DEVIL So by the great devil, all our journey is not worth an egg! Let the churl stay where he is. Let's all go off to hell, mates, to everlasting torments. [They go to hell with great noise. An Angel conveys Adam's soul to limbo] ### KDL page 57 (cw2071 -- cw2110) [Stokes cw2070 -- cw2109] ANGEL O soul of Master Adam come with me to hell. There a place is reserved for you by the Father for sure, to stay there for a time. When the Oil of Mercy comes you will be taken to joy in heaven high above. [Let Adam be buried in a fair tomb with some church songs at his burial] SETH Since my father is dead I will bury him. Let us go forth resolutely and lay his body in the ground with ceremonial and song. He was created out of the ground and he will surely again be returned to the ground. And as was formerly bidden me the three pips are placed in his mouth and his nostrils. [The three kernels put in his mouth and nostrils] As he was the first man who was made by the Father, behold him now in the grave. May God the Father be here thanked for his works. ### ENOCH ### ENOCH Enoch is my name, a faithful servant of the Trinity Father. I am the son of Jared for sure. I am descended no doubt from a very great lineage. And most truly I am descended the seventh generation from Adam. I am now indeed three hundred and sixty years of age and yet five more today if I remember. I pray to the Creator of Heaven that I might always be willing to be his unfailing servant in this world so long as I live. ### KDL page 58 (cw2111 -- cw2146) [Stokes cw2110 -- cw2145] [Enoch kneels when the father speaks] FATHER IN HEAVEN Enoch, I tell you my will is thus: for you to be quickly transferred. I will have you fetched away rapidly to paradise in body and soul. Be prepared at this time. And there you would wait nearly until the end of the world. The mystery is very great. It will not be revealed by me to any man in this world. [Enoch is carried to paradise] ENOCH Praised be God the Father! May your will be done! This is a great wonder. I am being taken I know not where! I know and truly believe this is God's doing. I know for sure I have come to paradise. This is a delightful place. I shall live in it a long time. Through the temptation of the devil by means of an apple my forefather Adam has most certainly lost the glorious place so that all his issue is forlorn. Therefore, people of the world, do not break the prohibition which is ordered for you by God for fear of meeting a bad end and great harm everywhere. If you pay heed to me, after this you will have the joys of heaven one after another. ### KDL page 59 (cw2147 -- cw2180) [Stokes cw2146 -- cw2179] ### SETH AND THE PILLARS ### SETH There are so many sins in the world committed by people without atonement, that God the Father is angry that he ever created mankind here. Destruction is most surely ordered on all the earth so that everything will be destroyed. That is comprehended in the teaching which is given me by the Father above. The planets which are above and the stars also are indicating very clearly. [Let him point to the sun the moon and the firmament] The sun and the moon also, which are all together in concert are coming to that purpose. And the destruction will be great so that the earth will be destroyed by very great floods of water, or it will be burnt with fire. Believe me is you are wise. Therefore let people fear to offend God the Father in any way whatsoever. To avoid that danger I have everything written from the beginning of this world so that there is faithfully recorded everything that has been done in it. [Four books to be shown]* Behold the books here. You can see them, wonderfully big, and everything in this world is written in them for fear it is forgotten. ### KDL page 60 (cw2181 -- cw2211) [Stokes cw2180 -- cw2210] I will immediately set up two pillars for the purpose. One of them will be of brick and the other will be of marble. They will be made as a protection for the books, [Two pillars made, the one of brick and the other of marble.] The one is made of bricks because they will not be burned by any fire, and the other is made of marble which will not be damaged at all by water because it is a rough stone, wonderfully hard. JARED The pillars are ready. Put the books in them. No art is forgotten, nor anything else for sure but it is written down in them. A copy of every kind of book is placed in it. The categories are likewise placed in them according to a plan, both different and similar. Now I shall raise them up, and in each, for ever more, the archive will most truly, unfailingly, be found. [Put the pillars upright] SETH So let people fear and let us all pray to the Father that the same vengeance does not come down upon us at any time nor on our children. ### KDL page 61 (cw2212 -- cw2244) [Stokes cw2211 -- cw2243] ### NOAH'S FLOOD ### FATHER IN HEAVEN I am sorry I made mankind exactly like myself. Through paying heed to a woman he has quite lost his place which I had set for him at my right hand. When he went beyond my prohibition the angel immediately drove him right out of paradise. The spirit will never dwell in the body of any human being, and the reason and wherefore is that he was made of soft flesh and very weak withal. There is no man loyal and true serving me any time indeed except Noah in all the world, and his wife and children too. My will is as follows: to wreak vengeance on all the world so that everything is destroyed, but I will save some. NOAH I am called Noah, the son of Lamech. All remember, I am a great lord here in this world. I have wealth and means enough to live so that I am beholden ever to worship my good Lord, the Trinity above. [Noah comes before heaven and kneels] FATHER IN HEAVEN Noah, come to me now and listen to what I say. NOAH I am ready, noble Lord. Speak your will. ### KDL page 62 (cw2245 -- cw2282) [Stokes cw2244 -- cw2281] FATHER IN HEAVEN Noah, the earth is now so full of wickedness that the end has come for all flesh in it. It is most truly stinking with sin. I cannot forbear any longer without shortly inflicting death on all people except you and your wife and children, and what belongs to you. So hasten, go and build a ship of planed planks with many dwellings in it. They shall be called "rooms". Let it be sealed inside and out with pitch, and the ship will be three hundred good cubits long and you will build her also fifty cubits across the beam and I want her built thirty cubits in height. You will make a door at the stern. It will be called a port. You will place beams across it so it cannot be opened wide. {You will set thwarts across it (the hull) so that it cannot be stoved in}. You will also put both male and female of every kind of species on board your vessel. Take care you bring every kind of food to eat which there is for both man and beast. Make sure it is on board your vessel. NOAH Mighty Lord I will carry out your commands, so must I go! I will begin without fail to stretch my limbs. [tools and timber ready with planks to make the ark, a beam, a mallet, a caulking iron, ropes, masts, pitch and tar] ### KDL page 63 (cw2283 -- cw2316) [Stokes cw2282 -- cw2315] With my newly sharpened axe I will chop each piece of timber and plane all the planks and position each board correctly. SHEM I will caulk for you wondrously accurately so that no water comes in. Even though it is stitched overhead it will be water tight, I'll warrant it. HAM I have tar ready for me and ropes of every kind. Different kinds of masts are in very plentiful supply. TUBAL CAIN I am surprised about one thing, that you are so stupid Noah. Why do you build so noble a vessel in the middle of the country, away from the sea? Furthermore, I feel your reason is going. With cost like that, all your toil is not worth a cat, I swear upon my soul! You are stupid! [Let Tubal fall a laughing] NOAH My friend, do not be surprised. You will lament it and many thousand. Although you have collapsed in mirth, eventually, without deceit or guile you will see a rapid revenge. I have been warned by God the Father to build this vessel to save myself and my children from that same vengeance. You will see shortly. All the world will be drowned in the most massive water floods. ### KDL page 64 (cw2317 -- cw2359) [Stokes cw2316 -- cw2358] TUBAL It would be better if you were hanged, you and all of that belief! You bald headed old churl, how do you intend that, for the world to be destroyed? All the waters in this world, even if they are gathered together, will not bring about an end like that! But every body can tell that you are stupid. Vengeance on your scabby head. There is not a man here in the land who believes you one jot. Why what is the matter? Will God drown the world? If you know, tell me what will happen, please, clearly. NOAH What will happen is this. There is so much sin in the world and there is no improvement so that God the Father is angry with all the people of this world. And he regrets that ever mankind was created. Therefore make amends; be renounced of your folly. Then if you are truly repentant this disaster will go away. TUBAL Who made you a preacher to instruct us here? I pray you tell me, did God speak only to you, not any one else at all here? I know there are many people in the land who talk of the Father, perfect men they are, I do declare and grand fellows who expect to be in God's favour. Sir, he would have revealed to some of these the great destruction and the flood. ### KDL page 65 (cw2360 -- cw2400) [Stokes cw2359 -- cw2399] So I will not believe you any more than a dog, nor will we make amends in spite of your wasted words. NOAH It is well for you to be wise and all the people of this world. God most truly will never be found to be a liar, believe me. Be mindful on their account. If you do not, a very great vengeance will descend upon you before long because God our Father will most truly send a flood of water to drown the world. To save myself as well as my wife and children this vessel will quickly be built by us with God's help to escape this danger. TUBAL Tilly-vally*, the cat's fart! I still do not believe you that God will do so. I know. He did not create the world and all the people who are in it to be so quickly destroyed. It is impossible for that water to be found. NOAH Nothing is impossible for the Creator of all this world, even destroying the world within an hour. For it was all made by a word, heaven and earth, all that is here, and again by a word, he can destroy it by means of the water believe me, if he wanted. TUBAL It is no use arguing with you Noah, it seems to me. I will go away, for you are a stubborn colt who will never be any good. ### KDL page 66 (cw2401 -- cw2436) [Stokes cw2400 -- cw2435] A greater fool has not been seen. I will tell you why. You know the vessel was begun a good time, very many years ago, more than twenty, for it was begun so big it will never be finished. I swear it on my conscience. [Let them both depart] NOAH Now the vessel is built, fine and good to my liking. Quickly bring me every kind of animal in pairs, cattle, birds as well, two by two, male and female. [The ark ready and all manner of beasts and fowl to be put in the ark] SHEM There is no animal or reptile on earth, male and female here which is not brought to you by me. They come there into the vessel. [Let rain appear] HAM Oh father, now make ready. The flood has now come. There are plenty of people in the world who indeed said before now that you were stupid. When you built the vessel here right in the middle of the country, indeed there was no sea to carry her away. JAPHET They made fun of it. There was no fear of God's wrath in them at that time I know truly. NOAH The flood has now come so it is good for us to hasten. All the animals have gone into the vessel after their kind as I was commanded. ### KDL page 67 (cw2437 -- cw2474) [Stokes cw2436 -- cw2473] Get on board, my children, and your wives as well. The earth is nearly covered with the water on top. You, woman, come on board. Oh dear, do you want to drown? NOAH'S WIFE I must save what there is. It is no use for me to throw it away. We want to save it. These things that are here cost a lost of money. You know that, Noah dear. NOAH [a raven and a culver (dove) ready] It has indeed been a long way since we lost sight of land. So go for me, raven ... [let the raven fly and the culver after] ... fly away now and see whether land can be found and I will indeed send the dove very quickly to see if it can see any sight of land. FATHER IN HEAVEN Every thing in which there was the breath of life is slain. I command forthwith that it rain no more. [The culver comes with a branch of olive in her mouth] NOAH May God the Father be thanked! The dove has come with a green olive branch. Let another be freed. The raven would not come back. It has found some carrion. It is now nearly a year since the flood started. If it is the will of God himself who is the Creator of earth and heaven to abate this great flood, may his will be fulfilled at all times here by us, both son and father. ### KDL page 68 (cw2475 -- cw2510) [Stokes cw2474 -- cw2509] FATHER IN HEAVEN Noah, I command you, disembark immediately from the vessel and also your wife and children, birds, animals and cattle. NOAH Much praise to you, Lord of Heaven. You help the weak and the strong, indeed when there is need. Let's go ashore, small and great, cattle, fowl and beasts, all that were brought in the vessel. I will build an alter in atonement for sin. I will make songs and sacrifice now some of every species, both animals and fowl to honour him thereby. And so let us sing here in praise to the Father. [An alter ready very fair. Some good church songs to be sung at the alter and frankincense] FATHER IN HEAVEN This is a sweet savour and also a good sacrifice. Very truly Noah, it is pleasing to me since it is made to me with a full heart. Therefore I will surely cause the rainbow indeed to be seen in the sky for ever after this. [a Rainbow to appear] Whenever I see it I shall remember you for ever. Trust me. I shall never cause any destruction of that kind by water to destroy this world, and therefore ... ### KDL page 69 (cw2511 -- cw2549) [Stokes cw2510 -- cw2548] ... increase and fill the world with people again. Every bird and beast in the world and fish is the sea as well, will be sustenance for you here. There is nothing created in the world but shall be for your use. Take care that no man is slain by you at any time. And if such a thing happens I shall require from the hands of that same man his blood which he spills. I have here formed man's image like unto myself. If you love me as is due, you will pay heed to me. NOAH We will do so as is our due and praise you for ever as is our duty. ### EPILOGUE ### This day is ended, may God the Father be thanked. You have all seen, whatever your class, many matters acted out and the creation of the whole world. Also you have all seen this world destroyed by very great floods of water. No human being was spared except Noah, his wife and children. Come tomorrow promptly. You shall see very great matters and redemption granted by the mercy of God the Father to save all who are lost. Minstrels, play the pipes for us now so that we may dance together as is the manner and custom.
