# `Bewnans Ke': the Life of St Ke # In April 2002 the world of Cornish studies was astonished and thrilled by # the news that a manuscript containing a new Middle Cornish text had been # discovered (Graham Thomas, `Two Middle Cornish plays: a note', National # Library of Wales Journal, 32 (2001 ), 121 2). The forthcoming edition of # the text by Graham Thomas and Nicholas Williams is eagerly awaited; # meanwhile many people, in Cornwall and elsewhere, are justly keen to know # more of the contents of National Library of Wales MS. 23,849D, for both its # linguistic and its literary interest. It is therefore desirable for a # reliable text to be made available as soon as possible, pending the # publication of Thomas's and Williams's edition. Thomas himself has # generously given his approval of my making an interim version of the text # available, until their edition is published. The National Library of Wales # has generously given permission for the text of its MS. 23,849D to be made # public in this way. All users of the present text will be grateful to Graham # Thomas and to the National Library for their generosity; once Thomas's and # Williams's printed edition is available, this internet-text will be removed. # Apparently nothing is known of the provenance of the manuscript. It was # found among the papers of the late Professor J. E. Caerwyn Williams after # his death in 1999. Caerwyn Williams seems never to have mentioned the piece # to anyone, although he had transcribed a small portion of it and must have # recognised its significance. The manuscript of the only other surviving # Middle Cornish saint's play, the Life of St Meriasek, is also in the # National Library of Wales, to which it came as part of the collection at # Peniarth, near Tywyn in the county of Merioneth (MS. Peniarth 105). Since # both these Cornish saints' plays, like the earlier Ordinalia (the Biblical # cycle), were evidently written at Glasney College at Penryn, it is possible # that the two manuscripts travelled to Wales together, and became separated # later. Many people, myself included, wondered at first whether this # discovery was too good to be true; but its genuineness seems guaranteed by # the script, by the language, and (as Andrew Hawke kindly informs me) by the # sixteenth-century watermark on the paper. The genesis of the present text # has been as follows. I transcribed it in summer 2002 from photographs # supplied by the National Library. Michael Polkinhorn checked my # transcription against his own, also made from photographs. I have sent a # copy of my text to Graham Thomas; the two transcripts have been compared, # and we have discussed the discrepancies. In a few places we have agreed to # differ as to the intended reading, but the text offered here is therefore # very close to Thomas's diplomatic text which will appear in Thomas's and # Williams's edition. Thomas has kindly supplied his numbering of the stanzas, # and they are the ones used here. They may be altered very slightly in the # final edition, and are therefore provisional at this stage. What is offered # here is essentially what is visible on the photographs; there are one or two # places where a letter (usually one easily deduced) is apparently visible on # the manuscript but not on the photographs. Although for the most part the # reading of the manuscript is clear, in a few awkward passages the # establishment of correct readings goes hand-in-hand with the elucidation of # the meaning, and in some of these passages it may be that a slightly # different reading will eventually come to be agreed. The following # conventions have been observed in the text given here. Since capital letters # and word-spacing are used inconsistently in the manuscript, as so often at # this period, I have standardised capital letters for proper names, according # to the sense where that is apparent to me at this stage. There will be many # other places where word-division or capitalisation will need to be altered # as elucidation proceeds. Since such work is very much in progress, I have # not presumed to punctuate the text. Expansions of abbreviations in the main # text have been indicated by italics, which are also used for the speakers, # the Latin stage-directions and the Cornish prose `headlines' (see below); # but it has not seemed necessary to indicate expanded abbreviations within # the stage-directions. Because the Arthurian section follows the story given # by Geoffrey of Monmouth so closely (see below), I have chosen forms # approximating to the conventional Galfridian ones for the names of some # minor kings whose names in the manuscript are written ambiguously (notably # Epistopus, corresponding to Geoffrey's Epistrophus, and Augelus). I have # occasionally offered an emendation, where there is no doubt what is # necessary, but in these cases I have indicated the manuscript reading as # well; such cases are ones where there is a simple scribal error of copying, # of a kind readily explained by the usual principles of textual criticism. # Other letters in square brackets have been supplied, either because they # were omitted by the scribe, or in places where the manuscript is damaged but # letters can safely be restored. The letters n and u, and sometimes other # letters, are ambiguously written in the manuscript, and only the sense can # dictate which should be used; there may well be places where elucidation # will show that I have chosen wrongly. No doubt there are also other minor # errors, typographical or other, still remaining, and I shall be very pleased # to incorporate any corrections sent to me. On the pages of the manuscript # the lines are laid out in a manner which indicates the metrical structure of # each stanza, and I have retained that indication by a system of up to three # indentations: lines whose indentation corresponds here are ones occupying # corresponding places within the rhyme-scheme of a stanza. The contents of # the play are given in a synopsis below. An old numbering of the leaves # indicates that the manuscript, which now contains twenty leaves, formerly # had five more leaves at the beginning, a pair of leaves at two points in the # interior (two between the present folios 8 & 9, and two between the # present 12 & 13), and presumably five more leaves at the end. These losses # affect our understanding of the contents. At first it was thought that the # manuscript contained two plays, one about St Ke (on the present # folios 1 - 8) and one about King Arthur (folios 9 - 20); but for reasons # given below it seems likely that the Arthurian section actually formed part # of the Life of St Ke, in which case the manuscript contains a single play, # and the lost leaves would have linked the two sections. The modern name # Bewnans Ke has accordingly become an agreed one for the whole text of the # manuscript, on the assumption that it is a single work, and by analogy with # Bewnans Meriasek, the modern name for the other saint's play in Middle # Cornish. However, St Ke is not mentioned in the extant Arthurian section. # The hand changes noticeably between the two sections, the earlier being in a # secretary hand of the mid-sixteenth century, while the later is in an italic # hand; but close examination suggests that the same person copied both parts, # since some scribal habits, and some letter-forms, are shared between the # first and second parts. However, the quality of the language and of the # dramatic action is considerably greater in the first section than in the # second. A moral saying spoken by St Ke in the first section is repeated # word-for-word by Modred in the second (stanzas 135 and 427). The key to # understanding the contents of the work is provided by a French summary of a # lost Latin life of St Ke, given by Albert Le Grand, in his La Vie, gestes, # mort, et miracles des saincts de la Bretagne armorique (Nantes, 1637, and # subsequent editions), under the saint's feast-day, 5th November. In the last # third of this summary the saint, after his dealings with King Theodoric # (Teudar) and the founding of his monastery at Kea, returns to Brittany. He # is then sent for by the prelates of Britain, asking him to intercede between # King Arthur and his nephew Modred, in an attempt to avert civil war. (The # story here follows very closely that of Geoffrey of Monmouth, and is # evidently derived from it, directly or indirectly.) However, with the # arrival of a Saxon army to aid Modred, St Ke decides that he can do nothing # to help and returns again to Brittany, passing through Winchester where he # persuades Queen Guinevere to enter a nunnery. He dies shortly afterwards at # Cleder, near the north coast of Finistere. (See also G. H. Doble, Four # Saints of the Fal (1929), especially pp. 7 - 21.) From this account it is # clear that we should expect a Life of St Ke to conclude with the story of # Arthur's betrayal by Modred, and it is therefore very probable that # Le Grand's summary thus explains the section concerning Arthur in our # manuscript. If so, we must suppose that in the two folios lost between # folios 8 & 9, St Ke returned to Cleder in Brittany, and the scene then # changed to King Arthur and his refusal to acknowledge the overlordship of # the Emperor Lucius in Rome; and likewise we must suppose that the presumed # five folios lost at the end of the manuscript included St Ke's abortive trip # to Britain, and then his return to Cleder and his death there. The language # of the text, like that of the Life of St Meriasek, is good Middle Cornish. # It largely fails to show any of the sound-changes by which Late Cornish (the # language of the late sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries) is defined, such # as the diagnostic change of nn to dn. (See O. J. Padel, A Popular Dictionary # of Cornish Place-Names (1988), pp. 26 and 32 4.) These sound-changes began # to appear frequently in the later sixteenth century, and are often shown in # the play The Creacion of the World (1611), though that text also continues # to use, by convention, some Middle Cornish spellings. Our scribe, though # writing presumably in the second half of the sixteenth century, twice # complained that his exemplar had been spoilt by the loss of pages (see the # remarks on folios 5r and 20r), so he was avowedly copying from an older # manuscript. We may conjecture that the lost original may have been written # in around 1500, like that of St Meriasek written in 1504, and the state of # the language would accord with this estimate. ## O. J. Padel ## ojp10@cam.ac.uk ## March 2003 ## ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ## # A very provisional English translation of Bewnans Ke made by Michael # Polkinhorn can now be found at : # http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grrraphics/BewnansKe.pdf # Like Oliver Padel's original pdf file of the Cornish ms text, this file gives # errors with _gv_ and some other readers, but works with _acroread_. ## ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ## ## Summary of the action of `Bewnans Ke' # The numbers are those of stanzas (as supplied by Graham Thomas); conjectures # of plot come from the French summary of a lost Latin life of St Ke, found in # A. Le Grand, La Vie ... des saincts de la Bretagne armorique (Nantes, 1637; # and subsequent editions), 5 November. # [Five folios lost, presumably recounting St Ke's noble birth, education and # promotion to the episcopacy, which he later renounces.] # 1 - 11 ... ... St Ke [still in Brittany?] restores to life one of three # shepherds, and then embarks for Cornwall by boat. {Or according to the # Cornish text, by flying flag stone!! No Celtic saint should be without one} # King Teudar's forester finds St Ke in the king's forest [of Rosewa, where Ke # had landed], and takes him to the king at Goodern [in Kea parish]. # 12 - 84 Teudar and Ke in theological dispute; Teudar orders St Ke to be # imprisoned; further disputation. Teudar agrees to give St Ke an estate near # the forest of Rosewa, and then plans to go hunting there. # 85 - 108 [Text incomplete, owing to damaged folios in the scribe's exemplar: # in the lost text St Ke shelters a stag hunted by Teudar, and Teudar or his # men (4 `torturers') steal Ke's oxen, and break three of his teeth when he # demands them back.] # 109 - 123 Ke causes a holy well to arise at Killiow Soor [in Kea parish]; he # cures a leper, who gives the saint more land [also in Kea parish]. Stags # come to plough for St Ke in place of his stolen oxen. # 124 - 180 Teudar [taken ill?] negotiates with Ke to make amends for his broken # teeth. Teudar and Ke agree that Ke shall have whatever land he can impark # while Teudar is in the bath; Teudar consults Owbra to concoct a potion; # Teudar gets stuck in the bath, and thus loses a large portion of land. # [Two folios lost: in the lost text St Ke returns to Cleder in Brittany?] # 181 - 230 Arthur in state: (181 - 192) Duke Cador and Augelus king of # Scotland; squires, bishops; (193 - 201) Beduer, Ke (Kay), Hoel, Cador, and # others; (205 - 212) 7 kings, as guests of Arthur, plus Modred and Gawain; # (216 - 230) knights. # 231 - 269 Emperor Lucius learns that Arthur refuses to pay tribute; he # sends 12 legates to Arthur (235 - 247, the 12 legates hail the emperor; # 255 - 269, they greet Arthur). # [Two folios lost] # 270 - 305 Arthur, with legates and kings, refuses to pay tribute; the # legates return to Lucius. # 306 - 355 Lucius sends for senators, kings, and dukes, who come to greet # him (339 - 353, 7 kings and 5 dukes greet Lucius). Lucius takes counsel and # departs for France. # 356 - 361 Arthur leaves Modred in charge and takes leave of Guinevere. # 362 - 374 Battle [in France] between Arthur's and Lucius's forces; Lucius is # killed and Arthur sends his head to Rome. # 375 - 409 Modred and Guinevere together in Arthur's palace; a bishop crowns # Modred. # 410 - 424 The news is brought to Arthur, who takes counsel. # 425 - 430 Modred obtains the help of the Saxon Cheldric. # 431 - 434 Battle between Arthur's and Modred's forces. # 435 - 437 Guinevere in the palace. # [Five folios lost? If the Cornish play followed the Latin life as summarised # by Le Grand, St Ke was presumably sent for as mediator but realised that his # mission was hopeless; he returned to Brittany, passing through Winchester # where he visited Guinevere and persuaded her to join a convent, and then # died peacefully in his community at Cleder.] ## ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ## ##OJP1 #### [`Bewnans Ke']: National Library of Wales, MS. 23,849D ### [5 folios missing] * * * * * ### [fol. 1r, photo 1] ## Kela[docus], surgit ...
